Youth and Children

During our 10.30am Sunday Services we have three groups for children aged 0-11 years:
(For children aged 11+ please see our ‘Youth Work’ section)
Each group seeks to help the children explore the Christian faith for themselves. We learn stories from the Bible, play games, make crafts and more, with an emphasis on fun.

bubblesBubbles is our group for children in Reception and Key Stage One (Ages 4-7). We currently meet alongside the Xstream group in the School.

On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month the children begin their groups in the School from 10.30am. The children are brought across to the Church to join their families in the service for Communion.

On 3rd and 5th Sundays the children start the service with the rest of the church family, when the leader indicates parents take the children to the School for their groups (parents return to church once the children are registered). The children are collected from the School by parents at the end of the church service.

xstreamXstream is our group for children in Key Stage Two (Ages 8-11). We currently meet alongside the Bubbles group in the School.

On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month the children begin their groups in the School from 10.30am. They are then brought across to the Church to join their families in the service for Communion.

On 3rd and 5th Sundays the children start the service with the rest of the church family, when the leader indicates parents take the children to the School for their groups (parents return to church once the children are registered). The children are collected from the School by parents at the end of the church service.

All our children’s leaders and helpers have current enhanced level DBS checks in place. Please see our ‘Safeguarding’ section for more information on our Safeguarding policies and personnel.

Welcome to the Sunday School Autumn Newsletter.

We hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful Summer holiday and that you’re ready for the new term at school and Sunday school. As the children move up a school class, likewise we look forward to welcoming some of the Bubbles group into Xstream. Ask one of the leaders if you are unsure of where your child should go. The timetable for the term can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.

Parish Camp

Parish Camp was a great success, bringing the community together. Some familiar and unfamiliar faces joined us, and all were welcome. It was wonderful to have so many families camping and spending time together. If you were unable to go this year, why not consider joining for a day, or the whole week next year. Details are available in the Spring and on the Church website.

Feedback

We want to ensure that the children of St Andrew’s Church have fun learning about God’s love for them and the Christian faith as they learn to worship at their own age and stage. We would love to hear your feedback about the Children’s work throughout the Church life. We always welcome parent’s thoughts and ideas, but understand that it isn’t always easy to give them face to face. Therefore, we will be asking parents for anonymous feedback during this term. Please do make sure that you let us know your thoughts so that we can improve the ministry. It might be suggestions about what topics your children did or didn’t like, the timings, Messy Church, activities, All Age services, music, games they would or wouldn’t like to play, etc. It may even be to say that you/they love it! Please put it all in. We will have a feedback collection box in the Church later in the term, so keep a look out for that. Whilst we can’t make promises that all of the suggestions will be done, it is vital to shape the future Children’s work. Thank you.

Memory Game!

Throughout the Summer term, the Bubbles and Xstream groups tried to memorise the books of the New Testament, in order! We were so impressed with their efforts and how many of them got it right after only a few weeks. We all practised together, and it was a good exercise in encouragement, perseverance, diligence and memory! While not all of them could do it, we cheered each other on, and they were awarded a sticker for trying every time. Did they share with you about it? It would be wonderful if you try to help them remember them. We will be playing various games to become more familiar with the Bible throughout the year. See if you can remember them…!

Term Topic

Throughout the Autumn Term we shall explore our faith in more depth. We will be looking at who God is, Jesus’ Mission, the Holy Spirit, what Church is, prayer, and what worship is; before we move into Advent as we look forward to Christmas. As ever, if you would like to know more about the sessions or topics, or would like some ideas about what you could talk about with your child at home, please do ask one of the leaders, or email.

Jesse Tree

Last Autumn term we did a Bible overview leading up to Advent. Many of the children made their own Jesse Tree sets and some were also given out at church. The Jesse tree can be a wonderful tool for families to use during Advent to remember where Jesus’ birth fits in to God’s plan. If you did not receive a set or would like to know more about it so that you can join in this year, please let us know, before Advent begins!

Half Term

Please note that there will be no Sunday School on the 22nd & 29th October for half term.

Messy Church

Messy Church runs every first Tuesday of the month 3.30-5.30pm in the Church and follows a different theme each month. Free snacks, games, songs, stories, multiple crafts and a delicious supper are provided. The next session is on Tuesday 3rd October. All welcome.

Prayer

Do please remember to commit the children’s work to prayer. The Bible says that “children are a blessing from the Lord” (Psalm 127:3), we believe this and know that encouraging them to develop their own faith and friendship with God is so important. If you are unable to volunteer to run the activities, perhaps you can support us in this way? Thank you.

Family Worship Ideas

Some of you may remember the skittle prayer activity from the Summer activity book last year. Did you do it? How did you get on? If you struggle to think of ideas to help your child develop in their faith or pray at home why not try one of these ideas…

Prayer Ideas

  • Collect some pebbles next time you are at the beach. Together, think of different things to pray about, perhaps the homeless, those who are unwell, family, the church, the school, the world. See how many fun pictures or words you can paint on (eg. World issues, try and find a spherical stone and paint the globe, etc). Put the finished pebbles in a bag or a bowl and take turns to take one out each and pray for that thing / person. Make sure you mix them around.
  • Lollypop sticks – Similar to the above, get some lolly sticks (Tesco/ Sainsburys/ Hobbycraft/ Poundland for about £1), ideally the coloured ones. Write on with different coloured felt tips different topics or people to pray for. Put them in a jar and each take one out after a meal time and pray!

Look out for more Christmas services and events on the Church newsletter, including family carol singing around the village.

With very best wishes for the coming term,

The Sunday School Team (Bryony, Hannah, Hellen & Heather)
